Summer Children's Program - Week 2

Today, we traveled all the way to Japan to learn some cool things!

First, we made carp kites. Carp kites are a traditional decoration in Japan, especially around Children's Day. We made our carp kites out of magazine "scales" and some crepe paper.

We also learned the Japanese characters for "book" and "river." Japanese is much harder than English!

Finally, we made Japanese fans by drawing our own designs on paper, folding them like an accordion and then gluing them to popsicle sticks.

Our carp kites and the Japanese writing are on display in the library. Come check it out!!

Next week, we'll celebrate Independence Day with some great crafts, games and stories. Join us!!

Summer Children's Program - Week 1

Hello everyone!

We've had a great start to our Summer Children's Program! Every Thursday during the summer, the MDPL hosts games, crafts, stories and movies for children aged 3-12.

Today, we had five kids come for our first program, "Island Fun"!

The kids colored island pictures, colored velvet bookmarks, made "palm trees" by tracing and cutting out their handprints, learned to hula dance and watched "Casper" (They didn't want to watch "The Little Mermaid" or "Free Willy"!).
